Program Overview
The University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC) Maternal Fetal Medicine Fellowship educates and trains obstetricians and gynecologists to become highly proficient maternal-fetal medicine clinician-scientists and leaders who are well-prepared to provide high-quality care, develop as educators, and pursue and excel in scholarly activities. The fellowship offers unique opportunities to work within a variety of novel, multidisciplinary inpatient and outpatient clinical models with a focus on community, innovation, education, inclusion and compassion.
Training Sites and Rotations
The three-year Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited program spans the main UMKC affiliates — University Health Truman Medical Center (UHTMC), Children’s Mercy Hospital (CMH) Fetal Health Center, and Saint Luke’s Hospital (SLH). The fellowship is designed to develop clinician-scientists who are prepared to conduct research, teach and provide high-quality subspecialty care. While rotating at these various sites, fellows work within multidisciplinary teams in service of a rich and diverse community.
University Health
At University Health, a safety-net medical system, fellows lead quality improvement initiatives and community-based advocacy that continue to have a deep, meaningful impact on how we deliver care.
Saint Luke's Hospital
At Saint Luke’s Hospital, fellows work with cardiologists and intensivists alongside their MFM faculty in their nationally-renowned maternal cardiology program, which is a hub of collaboration and critical care research.
Children's Mercy Hospital Fetal Health Center
At the Fetal Health Center, fellows collaborate within a team that includes neonatologists, pediatric surgeons and cardiologists, and palliative care workers, learning fetal care and related procedures through a large, well-reputed referral center. In the course of training, time is dedicated to research, coursework, ultrasound interpretation, genetic counseling and education.
Research and Conferences Components
Each fellow is expected to conduct independent, hypothesis-based research under a mentor’s supervision to fit the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology's (ABOG) thesis requirements. The research opportunities include translational molecular, developmental pharmacogenomics, advanced ultrasound imaging and clinical investigations.
Conferences, graduate courses and tutorial sessions round out the training, allowing fellows to achieve Board certification in Maternal-Fetal Medicine. The fellows also have the opportunity to obtain a Master of Science (MS) degree in Bioinformatics through the university. Our fellows have completed clinical trials, presented at international conferences, and have been awarded and recognized for their exemplary work.
Join a Tradition of Excellence
The UMKC Obstetrics and Gynecology department takes great pride in the MFM fellowship’s legacy of excellence, especially as many former fellows have returned as faculty. As a division, we strive to provide a nurturing and intellectually stimulating learning environment that prioritizes the needs, education, and growth of our fellows, who even after graduation, carry on our mission-centered ethos, which is focused on innovation and community service.
